Nazanin's death sentence stayed; faces retrial

, posted: 3-Jun-2006 15:13

Maybe the Iranian authorities took note of the Save Nazanin campaign, maybe not, but amazingly enough sanity has prevailed: Nazanin's death sentence has been stayed by Ayatollah Shahroudi, Iran's Head of Judiciary.

Nazanin has not been released though. Instead, Shahroudi ordered a retrial at a lower court, which may again impose the death sentence for Nazanin.

Earlier reports said that Nazanin's sentence had been rejected. Blood money or dieh was to be paid to the family of the man who was stabbed while attempting to rape Nazanin.

There is still need for governments and people to keep up the pressure on the Iranians in other words, to stop Nazanin being killed for no good reason.
