ReelTime downloadable movies coming to NZ - but will it work here?

ReeltimeM-Net says Australia's ReelTime downloadable movies and games service will be available for New Zealanders from next week, which should make things interesting for the likes of TVNZ. The NZ version of the Reeltime site is already up, and there's an extensive catalogue of films available from the big film studios.

I'm not sure yet what the pricing for New Zealand will be, but the Aussies pay from A$5.95 per film and A$0.95 and upwards for TV programmes.

Reeltime's terms look a lot better than most other services I've seen: 30 or 60 days rental, depending on programme type, and you get permanent download-to-own content as well, with rights to use on three different devices (computer, mobile and burn to DVD).

On the whole, Reeltime looks pretty cool, with the caveat that I haven't seen what the quality of the films is like yet.

But, will it work in NZ? The films seem to be between 700MB to 1GB a piece, or ten to twenty per cent of a typical DSL customer's monthly data cap. Reeltime may find it hard to drum up sufficient custom in NZ because of this.

Then there's the speed issue... if it takes longer to download Reeltime films than nipping down to the DVD rental store, it's probably not a terribly attractive service for people. I wonder if Reeltime will set up a local server to speed up downloads, or serve content from Australia?
