NZ Police applies pepper spray 'by hand'

Paul Brislen drew my attention to this item from the Waikato Times, and more specifically, this paragraph:

Police confirmed pepper spray was used to subdue Ripia but said it had been applied by hand rather than sprayed.

Ripia attacked the policeman at the Hamilton District Court, was subdued and later died in hospital. The cause of death hasn't been confirmed yet, but the story says Ripia collapsed and stopped breathing - and that the policeman who was attacked performed CPR on him.

Still though... as Paul says, how do you apply pepper spray by hand?
