Technorati ranking randomness

TechnoratiIf you blog, you'll soon come across Technorati, the "recognised authority on what's going on in the world of weblogs." It's a handy site, in many ways, where you can see how popular (or ignored) your blog is. Yes, we're talking about the famous Technorati Rankings...

Almost 53 million blogs are tracked by Technorati, and here's the current Top Ten, as of Saturday Sept 2 2006, GMT+1200:

That's looks mostly OK, but is the 4th ranked site really a blog? XiTi seems to be a a web site traffic measurements provider. There is no blog on the XiTi site as far as I can tell. Is Technorati picking up the XiTi traffic tools on sites around the world?

PostSecret is a brilliant idea, and it is hosted on But is it a blog? I'm not so sure. It's not even described as such.

And BoingBoing... isn't that just a glorified link farm? :)

Which are the most popular blogs in NZ then? Not Techsploder, sadly, which is buried in the 45k-50k rankings bracket... these seem to lead the field however:

Rank: 41 (14,293 links from 5,438 blogs)

New Zealand Herald
Rank: 49 (14,141 links from 4,888 blogs)

Rank: 1,774 (3,876 links from 844 blogs)
Rank: 2,479 (1,521 links from 682 blogs)

Computerworld New Zealand
Rank: 2,982 (1,555 links from 600 blogs)

Congrats to Stuff and the Herald for breaking into the Top 100 with their... ermm, blogs. However, both have a long way to go before they get close to:

The Sydney Morning Herald
Rank 6: (56,556 links from 16,170 blogs)

Hmm... but why doesn't the SMH show up in the Technorati official Top Ten? They actually have blogs on SMH, unlike XiTi.
